One of the reasons we do what we do here at SocialVibe is not only raise funds, but to raise awareness for causes that don't have enough eyes and ears on them. Pancreatic cancer has the
highest mortality rate of any cancer, including breast, prostate, colon, and all others. Despite that disturbing statistic, it is also one of the causes with the least awareness, funding and support. The research for pancreatic cancer is where breast cancer research was in the 1930s, and because of this, there is currently
no early detection, no effective treatment and NO cure.

Dr. Randy Pausch was a brilliant, charismatic 47-year-old professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon. He was a best-selling author who achieved worldwide fame for his "The Last Lecture" speech on September 18, 2007 at Carnegie Mellon (shown below).

Dr. Pausch was also diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in August of 2006. After an unsuccessful surgery and experimental chemotherapy, the doctors told Randy that he only had approximately 3-6 months of good health left. He chose to make each one of those days count by devoting his time to the fight for increased funding for and awareness of pancreatic cancer research.

He joined the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to tell Congress of the need for more research, better treatment options and real hope for pancreatic cancer patients. In his powerful and emotional Congressional testimony, he reiterated the urgent need to increase federal funding for pancreatic cancer research and said “people in research labs can do miraculous things if they’re given the resources to do their jobs.”

Unfortunately, Dr. Pausch passed away this past Friday, July 25. On the bright side, the public awareness and visibility Dr. Pausch raised on Capitol Hill is unparalleled. He has helped change the course of history for this disease and blazed a new trail for advocates and volunteers to carry his legacy forward. Volunteers and advocates like YOU.

Check out the video of Dr. Pausch's last lecture below.. it is truly inspiring!

Honor the legacy for Dr. Randy Pausch and get involved today. Select the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network as your charity.

I watched his last lecture on TV, about when he was gone he'd leave so many things to his son so he could remember him, it wasn't that long ago, I was very inspired and I am 15, I have no idea why I turned to that channel and why I didn't say "This is lame" like most of my friends because something like this wouldn't be cool to watch, I listened I learned and I repeat his words in my mind daily. I can't believe he passed already, he was so alive even though he was sick and tired, and I am sure he knew how many people's lives he has changed. He died with pride, peace of mind, and a feeling of accomplishment, his work here truely was completed.

I found several videos on Youtube and each of them is incredible :-)

Much in the way that Lance Armstrong has been an advocate for cancer funding/awareness, Randy did SO much in the few months that he had!

What a great opportunity to use SocialVibe to raise funds for PanCan and continue the movement in his absence :-) :-)

Definitely in tears. I remember watching this with my grandmother in one day when I was visiting her and thinking how happy I was that I was finally following my dreams. I wanted to contact him somehow and just speak to him, get some of his energy, hear his enthusiasum personally...what an experience that would have been. Following my dream has taken up much more of my time than I would like, and to hear I missed my shot at speaking to him, well, it makes me appreciate this video that much more. My grandmother is now gone and hopefully talking to him about his impact on my life. I feel more committed than ever to my dreams thanks to her, Dr. Pausch, SocialVibe, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the thousands of other individuals and organizations that seek to make a difference and lend a posivite attitude. Just think of how much he accomplished in such a short period of time...inspiration defined!

R.I.P. Another celebrity that has pancreatic cancer is Patric Swayze. Also, my husband's aunt was diagnosed a few months back with pancreatic cancer. She has undergone surgery and as on all kinds of medication. Even with everything that she has endured and the pain that she deals with all the time, she is still full of life and gets out of bed everyday to see what's in store for her.

commenting this again but i love how instead of moping around giving up, he joked around. his grandparents were riding roller coasters when they were 80. he poured a can of coke in the backseat of his brand new convertable because its just a thing. he had a quick wit and an awesome sense of humor. i wish i couldve met him.

I just watch the ABC Primetime Special last Tuesday on Randy Pausch. It was inspiring piece about his last lecture. One thing I will take from what he said is about having only 3 words is to "TELL THE TRUTH" and additional 3 words is "ALL THE TIME". Words that we should live by all the time. RIP Randy!

When I first saw his lecture in may on youtube, I was totally blown away. I ended up watching it twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. He just makes people want to do great things in life, no matter how small. When I heard he passed I was really shocked. I was mourning for someone I had never met.

My grandpa passed away from this unfortunate illness in December 2005 after being diagnosed only several months before. Since there is still not much known about the illness, there is the likelihood that I could inherit it later on in life as well. I saw Randy on TV before his death and you could tell from him giving his abridged “Last Lecture”, which brought tears to both my mom and my eyes, what a great role model and person he was. He didn’t let his illness bring him down, and he even demonstrated to the audience that he was probably more fit than any one of the audience members, which showed true strength and courage even though he knew he was going to die. He was not a quitter.

Randy, you were such an amazing person and thank you for strengthening public awareness!
