I'm always looking for new ways to help reduce my 'carbon footprint.' When I read this article on geeksugar about the benefits of downloading movies digitally vs renting, it was a total "Duh" moment for me. I used to buy DVDs like crazy, I built up quite the collection, and to be honest, I don't really watch them that often. They sit on a shelf and collect dust! So years ago I stopped, but found that I hate going to Blockbuster or other video rental stores because they are generally sold out of whatever it is I am looking for. Plus, I'm lazy.

I've been using Netflix for the past couple of years to rent DVDs, which I've found to be quite helpful, since it's pretty inexpensive and you can keep them as long as you like. It takes a few days to get the next movie on your queue, which can be a pain for impatient people like me, but all in all, it's not bad. But now even doing the mail-order delivery service, just like trekking to the video rental store, is becoming a bit pre-historic. The new thing is DOWNLOADING your movies!
Considering the range of services available - iTunes, Amazon, even Xbox 360 streaming Netflix movies - there is certainly no shortage of options for getting your flicks. The ecological benefits of downloading movies are undeniable... not only is it more convenient, but it beats spending gas to drive to the video store and rent a movie. It is also all-digital, which beats having to produce a video tape (if you're old school) or DVD. Plus, if you buy the movie online - you get to keep it - FOREVER - vs renting it and having to send it back. Funny how that works.
So how do you get your movies - do you download, stream, or do you still rent? Would you switch to downloading to help the environment? It seems like a no-brainer to me!
