Oprah Winfrey is arguably one of the most influential people in entertainment today. The highly celebrated daytime talkshow host was also named the Most Charitable Celebrity by Parade Magazine, after donating over $52 million last year alone.

On her show today at 4PM EST, Oprah and her investigative reporter Lisa Ling are going behind the scenes of the poultry farming industry and exploring just what happens behind closed doors at these organic, free-range chicken (and egg) farms.

Also focusing on California's Prop 2., her show will educate voters on the current treatment of animals in factory farms. Prop 2 would provide protection for, and prevent inhumane treatment of, farm animals.

Oprah has an incredible 10 million viewers a day, so it will be interesting to see how her coverage of this hot topic will blow over. Are you going to watch?

If you are an animal-rights enthusiast or vegetarian, be sure to check out PETA2 on SocialVibe. Choose them as your cause and start earning free donations today.

Ok honestly! They keep them as they do for your saftey. I was in FFA and 4H ok ya they are kept like that so they dont get cross comtaminated.. and sick from wild birds! Its not all that cruel r u looking at all the bad parts. Chicken farming isnt horrible.. Y dont u do ur own research and look it up and hey maybe go to one and see for your self that its humane!

I have been there and seen it. I lived right next to a slaughter house. Thats WHY I am a vegetarian. And likewise, you're only looking at it for the good reasons. They don't keep them in cages for the sole reason to prevent cross contamination, they keep them in cages so they can produce an unimaginable amount of animals at one time. Oh, do they give them steroids and other medicines so that they wont get cross contaminated? Or is it because the conditions they live in are so terrible, they they wouldn't be able to survive without them. Point is, its not humane to do what slaughter houses do, why don't YOU do research for yourself.

I don't see why we even need to vote for this. The treatment of some of these animals is appaling! >:[ how would anyone like to live like they do? If you're gonna take their life by eating them, then you can atleast treat them with a little more respect! :(

It's just wrong, not matter if it's Chickens, Cows,Pigs or whatever no animal should be treated like that and made to live in confined spaces.

Hopefully this episode of Oprah will FINALLY open the eyes of people. What people do animals is WRONG and it's time some of the greedy people in america realize that.

Pardon me, the way people treat animals is wrong is what I meant to say.
Hopefully some of the careless, inconciderate, and greedy people of america realize that.
Seriously now..

Yes, we get the fact that PETA has been doing this for years. I think there approach is not always the correct one. How can they expect people to be open to the things they have to say when they have an almost crazy approach to things. I do believe animals should be treated in a more humane way beacuse it is very sad in the conditions they live in, I have seen it first hand and it is disgusting!!!!

Yeah, my step Mom was telling me about this- we have our own free-range chickens and get their eggs.

But if that PROP2 act does go through, all farm products will increase in price

Stacia., I agree.

FromHeadsUnworthy, as much as Oprah has a following, there are a great number of us who disagree with many of her beliefs and techniques, as well as her attitude, and political stance.

Also, does anyone think the happy-smiley picture of Oprah next to oppressed chickens seems a little... awkward?

I wish I would've known about this before 4 o'clock, cuz now I missed it!
but good for Oprah opening people's eyes to this.
anyone know if she featured anything about the terrible treatment by KFC workers as well?

Yeah, my mom told me about this! She said she'd watch it, because I'm vegan, but she thinks that free-range eggs are cruelty-free, even though I've told her about this.
I don't know if she did watch it though, or if it came on already?

MaddHatter

i'm gonna watch it, but i'm still gonna eat chicken. Come to think of it...I JUST got done eating a McChicken from McDonalds.

I was actually researching Prop. 2, and I thought this article made a good point
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-ed-2prop25-2008sep25,0,4887554.story

I mean , I'm not saying I'm for mistreating animals, because I'm not.
but the article did mention that by voting yes, there is a possibility even more hens will be cramped together just for the demand of cheaper eggs.
