Best Buy has declared today, October 30, National Vampire Awareness Day. The vampires they want you to be aware of are not the stereotypical blood-sucking kind, but rather the energy suckers that needlessly drain electricity.
Did you know that whenever electronics are plugged in, even when your cell phone charger is not charging your phone or your computer is turned off, electricity is being sucked from the outlet? And you are charged for that usage on your electric bill!
The biggest vampires of them all are computers, televisions, and anything that remains in "stand by" mode when not in use. The Department of Energy suspects that 40% of all electricity is consumed by products that are turned off.
Best Buy -- in an obvious effort to sell more power strips -- is spreading the word that you can stop this suckage by plugging all of your devices into a power strip and turning off that power strip when it's not in use. They have other energy saving tips at http://www.vampireawareness.com.
Check out the video Best Buy created in honor of this fang-tastic day.
