PETA has named talk show host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey their 2008 Person of the Year. Their reasoning behind their choice? According to PETA, the philanthropist "uses her fame and listening audience to help the less fortunate, including animals."
Oprah, who topped Parade magazine's list of Most Generous Celebrities after donating $52 million to charity last year, also used her talk show to uncover the dark side of factory farming, puppy mills, and gave viewers a glimpse into her life as she attempted a 21 day vegan diet. PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk said that Winfrey has used her “powerful voice to defend those without one.”
Previous winners of the PETA award include U.S. Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia in 2007 and the founders of the San Francisco-based cleaning product company Method in 2006.
Congrats to Oprah for all her hard work and effort! It's great to see someone with that large of an influence use it to spread awareness for such a worthy cause.
