Friends of animals and supporters of spcaLA and peta2 alike can exhale, now.

President-elect Barack Obama has made one decision already that we can all support - he officially confirmed that the future first dog of the white house will indeed come from an animal shelter.

In an interview with ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulous," Obama confirmed the dog would come from a shetler, and revealed their first choice for the breed - a labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound. “Now, we’ll go to a shelter and see when either one of those comes up,” he added.

While this has long been the future President's first choice, his daughter Malia's allergies have played a part in their search for a canine friend. This choice more than backs previous statements made by Obama regarding support for shelters and animal rescue programs.
