Michael Phelps' recent walk down stoney lane earned him more punishment than most kids his age receive for similar acts; in addition to much unwanted media scrutiny, he has also been stripped of several brand sponsorships and endorsements.

Even after issuing an apology, the public doesn't seem have a whole lot of forgiveness in them. His collaborating partiers, on the other hand, got off scot-free! Until now, that is.

Columbia, South Carolina Sheriff Leon Lott was getting a lot of grief for spending so much time investigating just Phelps' role in the bong-tastrophy, so he decided to go after all eight of the students involved.

Eight total arrests were made, 7 for possession and 1 for distribution. Keep in mind that although Phelps has dealt with his share of wrist-slapping, the Olympic swimmer hasn't been officially charged. These kids totally got the crap end of the deal!

I'm willing to wager that if they weren't with Phelps, they would have never found out.

What do you think - is this totally unfair or is justice being served?

P.S. The infamous bong was seized by police after the owner tried to hock it on eBay for $100,000. For a bong? Really?

i think that's pretty ridiculous. yeah, weed is illegal...and really gross. but...these are some college kids having a good time. they just got such a bad deal on it because they were with phelps, and everyone was criticizing cops for only going after phelps. so...i guess it sucks to be them. and lesson to learn...don't party with celebrities.

Hey weed isn't a bad drug! People don't die from it like, cigerettes, cigars, pills, and alcohol. I don't get what the big deal is with the whole thing. Most Americans have tried weed at least once. I've tried it once, but it doesn't mean that I still smoke it. The government is stupid in not making marijuana legal. Talk about a money maker!

I think it's blatantly retarded to be harshing this kid. Oh my GOODNESS! HE SMOKES POT AND DRINKS! Seriously? Get a hold of yourself. He was no angel to begin with. Sure enough he's one hell of a famous person, but to treat him like he's some kind of royalty? Holy Frankensteins!

BTW: weed may be an Herbal drug, but it numbs the nerve system. Which is why they distribute it to people with Cancer or other painful terminal illnesses. IT CAN KILL YOU, just not internally. You physically have to be doing something. Impairs your judgment. I COULD care less who smokes it, who does anything with it. As long as you aren't under the age of 18, then you're golden in my eyes. But if you backing it up, you obviously have something to do with it. YES, Weed is a controlled substance.

So honestly. Point.

phelp got what he deserved. i was a major phelps fan, but he blew it, its his own dumb fault he's in the public spot light dont you think he'd know by now that everything he does is exposed to the media? wow and $100,000 some people would pay more haha. but really he claims he wants to be a role model like tiger woods, but what now? i mean i know life can be tough on celeberties, but come on dont me a moron.

I think they just need to drop all of this. Poor Phelps is getting hassled way to much. They need to just leave them all alone. Tell them bad kids and drop it. Phelps is getting to much b/c he's famous, most others wouldnt get this and it isnt fair. and the 8 others shouldnt get that much since they were with him. THis is all getting blown out of proportion and they need to drop it.

it's rediculous that this was ever brought to the publics attention, he's a kid, kids do shit at parties, plus he's not training or swimming right now obviously cuz he gets drug tested like crazy when he is. the opinion that just because ur famous ur automatically some sort of role model is a rediculous added stress that a lot of ppl dont need. we as americans need to stop caring about what other ppl do in their private lives and maybe try reading a book or something worth while

.00Typical MSM & the public holding celebs to a different standard 24/7. No, he should not smoke pot but he is not competing right now. More important issues to cover other than this, so over the top. It's pot. No one died. The media sounds hyped because they have a new story. A juicy new story,

The police did what they thought needed to be done, and in this instance it is the correct punishment, however everyone involved should get the tickets (or jail time) including Phelps. If Phelps is skirting the charges, because he is a celebrity, that is not right if one person gets punished they all should, and vise versa. Also, trying to sell the bong on Ebay is about the dumbest thing that guy could have done.. he proved himself guilty of the crime! it is easier to just say no, and be done with it!

Not to mention the fact that a news article came out yesterday about how researchers have found that marijuana use is linked to an increase risk of testicular cancer: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090209075631.htm

For some reason, I think Phelps would care... just a little bit.

People need to look into the history of why cannabis was made illegal in the first place. Alcohol is WAY worse..look at the statistics..yet alcohol is socially sanctioned and even glamorized. This country operates according to reverse logic..srsly.

It's not so much that he smoked, it's just that he is a role model and should remember that. Same with people like Miley Cyrus. She does all this stuff and people bash her because she doesn't act like the role model she should be. Michael Phelps messed up, but he'll get his reputation back. 12 gold medals vs one-time bong? Kellogs will warm up eventually (Wrigley's and Chris Brown, now I'm not sure...).
As for the other guys...I have no idea how I feel. Whether marijuana should be legal or not, they know it's illegal and being with a celebrity, there's more risk. They knew it, they took the risk. Just because people think it should be legal doesn't mean it's right for them to break the law. If someone was a white supremacist, is it right if they shot everyone who's not caucasian, just because they thought it was? (Yeah, examples a bit extreme, but I hope you get my point.)
