I guess it's believable. Though, I'm a sophomore and I got a 29 on the ACT (About a 1300 on the SAT) and I listen to pretty much every band on the lower half of that chart. Haha.

I have been told that babies who listen to classic music will be smarter and do better in school but I am not sure how of that I actually believe. How could music work like that?

I just noticed a lot of rock bands I listen to are on the lower half of the scale, but I'm not dumb. I was in honors classes at my school for years. I think this is in between. I know intelligent people listen to music like Beethoven. I think music depends on the kind of person you are. The types of music babies are exposed to when they are, well babies, is what is used to determine their brain growth. Obviously during this stage while their brains are still growing, the type of music they are being exposed to will either encourage or stunt brain growth. Once your brain is in the adult stages of life, after it is reached its max growing potential, the type of music you listen to now doesn't necessarily make you "smarter" or "dumber." However, it's been shown that those who listen to classical type music have better memories.

there are sooo many flaws with that theory especially because i am one of those people who listen to mainly greenday, but i also listen to many other song from about 90% of those artists listed... the only proprer way you could really test the effect of music on someone's intelligence is to actually have them listen to some of those artists and have them take an IQ test at the same time. not that it will really work because everyone's brain works differnetly and differnet things appeal to different people.

Those that are more intellectual may think that classical music is more sophisticated and needs a real talent, and so are swayed more towards it! I think it has a lot to do with money. Kids who are well off are brought up listening to classical music. Those are also the kids who have private education and tutors. I'm not saying in every case though.

For example, if you listen to rap, you probably spend most of your time trying to be a gangster or whatever, and if you listen to rock, you probably spend most of your time at concerts, both of which take away from your learning expeirnce, since your actually not doing anything to make yourself more intellectual.

It will have a genre on one part of the chart and then a band out of the same genre in a diffrent part of the chart. I don't agree, I think the matter isn't the music type, it's the people who are smarter. They choose to listen to Beethoven, but it is not always so. I know very intelligent people whom choose not to listen to Beethoven, but hip hop or rock.

I'm more inclined to think it works the other way around. Music doesn't necessarily make you dumber, however, people who are on the same level of intelligence will be more inclined to listen to the same type of music. The same can be said about people who have similar upbringings, ethnic backgrounds, etc.

To say that music makes you dumber seems a little ridiculous. You could take a dumb kid, force him to listen to Beethoven, and it's not going to make that kid any smarter.

Studies like this almost seem pointless to me in though because while you can point out similarities people are people. You're always going to have exceptions to the rule.

kind of hard to understand the chart, maybe these ppl are listening to lil wayne jk. i listen to alternative and stuff and i have a 98 average. interesting but kind of stereotyped.

i really don't think music affects how smart you are, how smart you are changes what you listen to, just saying.

I think it's more based around how your brain wave frequencies are reacting with the rhythm, beat, tempo, etc. I'm sure it's not the exact same for everyone, but different music does have a tendency to stimulate different parts of the brain. It's not like this is the only study showing this kind of information to be true.

I don't think it is necessarily the music that makes you dumb, but say if you listen to lil wayne and you think "yeah these are good lyrics i believe this outlook on things is the right one"

The ones higher on the chart are bands that have deeper meanings to their music and outlook on things.

Its the way you interpret what you are listening to.

i think if you are smart to begin with, and smart enough to say 'hey, if i listen to this it will not make me dumb, i'd rather listen to lil wayne then listen to music that bores me' etc, then i dont think it will make you dumber. but if someone who is not that smart says 'im going to listen to beethoven to get smart' they probably will get smarter, cz it all comes down to BELIEVING ;D

I have always questioned if these statements were true or not. Now I'm beginning to believe that it is true. Hehe this might sound vain but I'm far from egotistical but this is why Beethoven and Bach are my homeboys

and i'm in ap calculus in eleventh grade.
so this list is sort of bogus.

I think this is stupid... I listen to almost everyhting on this list and some bands not listed and i have a 4.0. As a freshamn I got higher scores on my PSAT than most junoirs and sophmores.

thats a really interesting point of theory to look at and as a media studies and music and media student i found those statistics evry interesting, in my opinion i think to some extent music does influence people in different way but with kids i think it affects them more hmmm really interesting topic though!!

I'm surprised at how low Jazz is located in the list. I'm above average, but i don't think one should base intelligence levels from musical tastes. The reason babies "become" smarter from listening to classical music(it was too low on the list, BS! *cough**cough*) is because classical music is made up of complex patterns and pitches that stimulate the brain. Of course, this occurs in all music, but on different levels of brain activity. I think it takes less brain cells to dance to a rap song than to actually pay attention to classical music and understand its meaning and message, imo this study was too generic and did not really give a good answer to the question

This is really weird.
Most of the stuff i listen to isn't listed on here.
However, my actual SAT score has several bands I do listen to nearby, wow o.o

While classical music like Beethoven is supposed to stimulate brain activity doesn't mean that genres like rap slow your brain down. From what I know from my stat class it appears that this sample has way to many biases to be considered fact. Personally, I listen to a little bit of everything.

I remember in 8th grade, during the second half of the year, my science teacher made us listen to Beethoven when studying and taking test. It really did raise my grades.

Well if you listen to Bettoveen then your mind is more relaxed, but if you listen to rap or something then your mind is kinda in a flurry. I kind of belive this is true.

I think the most intelligent people are open to all kinds of music- they are generally open minded and are therefore most susceptible to gaining knowledge.
