It's not enough that we have to worry about monitoring our energy consumption to reduce global warming, but evidence being released everyday indicates a global water crisis as well.

We already learned that just one latte from your fave coffee house requires over 50 gallons of water, but are we wasting water by eating meat, too? In honor of World Water Day (that's today), let's investigate.

This article in GOOD magazine claims that producing a pound of chicken requires 287 gallons - a whole 281 MORE than it takes to flush a toilet. Interesting. Their transparency chart depicts just how much water is used by a number of different practices - latte-drinking and meat-eating included.

According to this chart, one baked potato = 7 gallons, a pint of beer = 10 gallons, one apple = 18 gallons, 2 eggs = 36 gallons/egg, and shockingly, one pound of beef = 1,500 gallons of water.

Why does so much water go into raising livestock? One odd (and disgusting) reason could be injecting animals with water to increase it's weight.

A global water shortage, in a world where 1 billion people already lack clean drinking water, is definitely bad news. Calculate your water consumption here.

Just a thought here but all this talk of not "killing anything" or eating "dead things" or whatever and trying to be morally superior to everyone. Well last I time I checked plants ARE LIVING so when you cut them from their roots to be frozen or however else they come you are indeed killing them. It's just that they don't have a face & don't make sounds and people don't generally associate feelings with plants.

hehe i get what this article is saying. but if everyone went vegan or vegetarian im sure it would take an obscene amount of water too increase vegetable production too. water is an essential component for a lot of things. i seriously doubt we are going to run out of the only element it is impossible to destroy. did we ever stop to think that maybe we are just too over-populated and the fact they we are running low on water is the worlds way of saying cut back on unnecessary BS like that pool in the backyard i know some of you have!! LOL. Not the water it takes to feed an animal that would be drinking that water regardless of it will be eaten in the future or not. (btw im vegetarian)

i disagree with maxii boii.

they still need to feed the animals water, yes.
during our daily lives we still use water, yes.

although, if more people become vegetarians they need to cut down the amount of livestock - which, cuts down on the water they use. since, people aren't buying enough meat products.

but also, being a vegetarian means more water to grow the crops that produce vegetables.

life needs water to survive. we can cut down, but we cannot fully eliminate what we use.

ever think of that ?
