Californians may still be waiting for the Supreme Court to declare the fate of gay marriage in the Golden State, but gay and lesbian couples in Iowa are celebrating today's legalization of gay marriage. Iowa's Supreme Court announced a ruling today, declaring a ban on same-sex marriage violates the constitutional rights of gays and lesbians.

The unanimous ruling stemmed from the 2007 Polk County District Court judge's ruling that the law was unconstitutional. The original case was filed by Lambda Legal, a NY-based gay rights organization, on behalf of six gay and lesbian couples in Iowa who were denied marriage licenses.
