Here's something to keep in mind as you prepare yourself for college life (or if you're already struggling at university). A new survey of college students shows that Facebook users have lower overall grades than non-users. Ironically, the study also shows that usage social networking sites does not interfere with studying. Huh?

Aryn Karpinski, an education researcher at Ohio State University, speculates that the problem lies in how students spend their time while not online. She says, "I'm just saying that there's some kind of relationship there, and there's many third variables that need to be studied."
Karpinski's study found that GPAs of Facebook users were in the 3.0-3.5 range on average, compared to 3.5-4.0 for non-users. It also found that Facebook users studied anywhere from 1-5 hours a week, compared to non-users who studied 11-15+ hours a week.
The study also show that students who work more hours at jobs spend less time on Facebook, while students involved in more extracurricular activities were also more likely to use Facebook.
So the problem may not be Facebook at all, but how students choose to spend their time. If they're easily distracted by socializing, therefore spending less time studying, your grades will suffer. Seems like a no brainer!
What do you think - has social networking affected your studies?
