As many of you know, over 25,000 of you participated in our High Schoolers Gone Good contest last fall, resulting in one school even winning a $10,000 check (Congrats again, Los Amigos!)
We're happy to announce that we have an even bigger program in the works that will allow EVERY school - both big and small - to participate. Of course we can't reveal too much yet, but we are looking for Campus Reps for as many High Schools and Colleges as we can find. We're looking for more than one per school, so don't worry if your friend signs up too - the more the merrier!
If you're interested in being a Campus Rep, please visit socialvibe.com/campusreps and complete the quick form. Once you sign up, we will be communicating with you throughout the summer about upcoming campaigns. If you were looking for a way to get your school involved in SocialVibe, this is your chance. Trust us, you won't want to miss it!
With the help of our brand sponsors, our causes and you, there are so many opportunities on the horizon for us to make a difference in the world. Help us get the word out at your school, sign up at socialvibe.com/campusreps!
Weeds has quickly become one of my all-time favorite shows, so when I heard they were going to be a Sponsor on SocialVibe, I was ecstatic. I've been looking forward to the new season for MONTHS (ever since that epic cliff-hanger at the end of season 4), and now not only can I see the trailer, but I can share it with my homies right in my SocialVibe badge.
If suburban drug-dealer Moms aren't your deal, perhaps you should check out Nurse Jackie, the brand new series featuring The Soprano's Edie Falco. The show chronicles the adventures of Jackie Peyton, an ER nurse trying to make it in a struggling healthcare system using her own personal justice system. One look at the trailer and you'll agree with me when I say this show is a guaranteed hit. (It also features Peter Facinelli from Twilight!)
Plus, by choosing Nurse Jackie as your sponsor, you can also TWEET to other fans about the show right in your badge.
Might I mention that both of these sponsorships also offer 3x the SocialVibe points, so not only are you repping awesome shows, but you're earning more money for your cause. Win-win.
I'm not sure if it's the cloudy weather in LA or simply the fact that Gossip Girl is now off the air, but vegging out and watching TV has never sounded so good. Both of these shows are just what the doctor ordered. Tune in to Showtime to catch Nurse Jackie on Weeds on June 8! And of course... click here to get sponsored by SHOWTIME on SocialVibe!
If you were excited about first official New Moon photos, you're going to flip over this just-released footage from the second movie in the Twilight series. It's only 15 seconds long, but we think that's more than enough to get excited about.
Edward and Jacob and Bella, oh my! Don't forget to tune into the 2009 MTV Movie Awards this coming Sunday to see the stars debut the first official trailer themselves.
Those of you who became addicted to Animal Planet's first season of Whale Wars will be pleased to know that the popular whale-hunting series will soon be back for a second season.
June 5 marks the return of the Captain Paul Watson and his crew aboard the Sea Shepherd, as they continue their quest to stop Japanese whalers dead in their tracks. Last year, the show not only experienced extremely high ratings, but the crew was successful in keeping the whalers from reaching their annual quota. Here's hoping they are even more successful this year.
Check out the Season 2 trailer below, along with a clip of some very graphic footage of a whale hunt.
Because Discovery warns that this footage is not appropriate for those under 18, we've put it behind a tag, but for those who may be on the fence about getting passionate about this cause, perhaps you should watch. (more...)
Who knew Philadelphia was such a role model city when it comes to protecting the environment and reducing energy consumption? The same historic city that recently gave their recycling trucks an artistic makeover is about to install 500 solar-powered trash compactor trashcans.
The units, called BigBellys, are a bit more complex than your average trash bin. They function as trash compactors, solar-powered of course, and hold 5 times the amount of trash as a normal trashcan. Plus, they are wired to send a text-message to waste management headquarters when they are all full. This decreases the frequency of pick-ups, which saves gas and energy.
The BigBellys are expected to save the city $13 million over the next 10 years.
How long until we see these in ALL cities? If you live in Philly, try and find one of these and take a Pink Ball pic with it, then send it to us: pinkballphotos@socialvibe.com.
Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor might look like he has a heart made of stone, but it just isn't so. The singer used the band's final tour as an opportunity to raise an astonishing $850,000 to help one of his fans get a heart transplant.
Eric De La Cruz was denied placement on transplant lists because of the lack of transplant centers in Nevada. Reznor heard about his situation through the grapevine after De La Cruz's sister, a former CNN.com anchor, started a website to raise funds for his surgery.
Eric and his sister, Veronica
The twittering singer was so touched, he joined forces with tour-mates Janes Addiction to help a brotha' out by offering VIP packages to attendees to benefit Eric's transplant fund. A $300 donation gives fans access to a pre-show soundcheck and meet-and-greet with the band, while $1,000 actually gets you backstage for dinner and relaxing with the band, as well as stage-side viewing for the show, autographs and pictures. Considering this is NIN's final tour EVER (i.e., your last chance to attend a show), that is a total bargain. Not to mention the money is going to save someone's life!
The response has been SO great, they've had to actually stop offering the VIP package for North American tour dates, said Reznor in a letter on his website. Instead, NIN has teamed up with pro skater Tony Hawk, who has kindly donated 1,000 collectible/signed complete skateboards. Supporters who donate $1,000 will now get one of these along with an autographed copy of NIN's rarest album STILL.
Of course, not all of us have a spare $1,000, so you can also donate in $10 increments on their website.
De La Cruz's fundraising website is just as focused on raising awareness for the unfortunate circumstances for a transplant patients like Eric in Nevada, and petitions Senator Harry Reid and other Congress members to improve legislation.
Imagine you're hanging out at home when all the sudden your father, who had recently undergone brain surgery, begins having a seizure. Your natural instinct is to call 911 and get an ambulance to your home immediately to prevent further complications. But what if the 911 operator refuses to cooperate, because in your fit of hysteria, you dropped a couple F bombs?
A teenager in Chicago suburb Lincoln Park recently experienced this exact scenario, and on top of it, was even arrested upon running to the police station to get some help after being hung up on numerous times. This is particularly infuriating considering the operator actually cusses BACK at her! Watch the local news story for more info:
Thankfully, the operator eventually caved and contacted a Rescue Squad to send an ambulance and the teen girl's father was alright. Charges against the teen have since been dropped and she has two years to decide whether she wants to sue for wrongful arrest.
We're almost positive there is no existing law that prohibits cursing on the phone. Even if the 911 operator were offended and wished to press charges, under no circumstances should he have hung up on the phone, potentially costing someone their life. What do you think- should she have cleaned her mouth up or is the operator a complete imbecile?
