There's a sad song being sung in the hearts of vegetarians this morning, as we read this interview that Dark Knight star and veg-since-the-age-of-7 Christian Bale gave to GQ about why he has gone back to eating animals.

The bodybuilding and unbuilding you’ve done for your roles is alarming—the former all the more so for its being accomplished without any animal protein.

Actually, I’m in and out of the vegetarianism now. But yeah, the majority of the building up you’re talking about was done when I was still a vegetarian.

When did you fall off the wagon?

Just after I’d completed American Psycho [for which Bale, as the preening sociopath Patrick Bateman, got furiously ripped].

Dietary reasons? Or something to do with the character?

I was up in Toronto and went to see that movie Life Is Beautiful. By myself. And when I came out, I had a craving for blood unlike anything I had ever experienced since I decided to go vegetarian at the age of 7. It was a compulsion. It was undeniable. I went to several restaurants, one right after the other, and got the biggest, bloodiest steaks I could get my hands on. It was the first time I had tasted flesh in almost twenty years.

    Life Is Beautiful.

    Yeah.

    That makes sense.
    Yeah.

Life Is Beautiful? Anyone else have a similar urge to consume massive amounts of steak following seeing this movie?

We were willing to dismiss his recent animal-like outburst on the Terminator set, but this, I'm afraid will be much harder for veg-heads to forgive. But hey, at least he's still partially "in" veggie-ism right?

That is pretty gross but I guess if you've got a craving you've got a craving. And it's not bad to eat animals (I'm a strict veg-head btw), it's about the way they are treated. I wouldn't be mad if he made a conscious effort to eat happy meat at least.

Psh. This isn't buzz worthy news/blog. Sorry.. I care a lot about how we treat animals. Not who's vegetarian and who's not.

I don't quite understand how you can just watch a movie and then go "Oh man, I need to eat a huge piece of flesh right now or I'm not going to die!" Like, after being a vegetarian for so long, how can you give it up so easily for just ONE craving that won't KILL you if you ignore. It's dissapointing.

Each to their own I suppose. Though I'm going to personally stick to my animal-friendly diet.

To Cerise:
"It's not bad to eat animals, it's about the way they're treated."

WTF they die either way, no matter how they're treated. Actually, killing animals in the first place when we don't NEED them is mistreating them.

Seriously, I just don't think some of you people should even be on SocialVibe, saying that "Oh he's finally normal" and "Good for him" and "I love him even more".
SocialVibe is about maknig the world a better place, and all you people are doing is making it worse.

God, this is an example of annoying people, "oh i was a vegetarian all my life but a saw a movie and packed it in" WHAT?! Ok if you where trying out being vegetarian for a month or so yea, go back to meat if you want, but seriously, people shouldn't just change.

wow, Piki..
the more people on socialvibe, the more the world is being helped. no matter who the people are/what they believe in.

I am a vegetarian, and I think it is odd that a movie made a vegetarian of how many years crave bloody flesh. but I'm not Christian Bale. I'm sure he saved a ton of animals for being a vegetarian for so long. and if he's still on&off veg than that's great =]

isn't that really bad for the body? :S i think my mum was explainin something to my aunty who has been veggie since she was 11, and that if she tried to eat too much meat in one go now it would make her very poorly because she's not used to it.. so would have to introduce it back in small doses

i just hope that's wrong and he doesnt make himself very sick =/

It's his choice :]
Doesn't really matter who's a vegetarian and who's not, just how the animals are treated like others have said.

I agree.
The only reason I don't eat red meat is because I don't know if the animal was tortured or not. So, whatever, whatever I guess. His life, not ours.(:
