In another small win for vegetarian supporters (and environmental activists), TIME magazine recently published an article advising people to 'Skip the Steak' if they want to help stop global warming.

22

The story, which is a "global warming survival guide" reads:

“Which is responsible for more global warming: your BMW or your Big Mac? Believe it or not, it’s the burger. The international meat industry generates roughly 18% of the world’s greenhouse-gas emissions—even more than transportation—according to a report last year from the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization.”

“If you switch to vegetarianism, you can shrink your carbon footprint by up to 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide a year, according to research by the University of Chicago. Trading a standard car for a hybrid cuts only about one ton—and isn’t as tasty.”

Full article available here.

That's a pretty big impact to be made by something as simple as eating less red meat. Will this information affect your eating habits?

"That's a pretty big impact to be made by something as simple as eating less red meat." that implies that its ok to eat chicken and pork.

I don't think that it implies that eating chicken and pork is okay, just that it's one aspect of it. Personally I don't think that this will affect me much, at least yet.

This is a big step. Pork and pig may not be recognized as bad for the environment, but at least people may stop with killing cows!

It's not eating the meat, it's the cow farts (methane emission) that are bad for the environment.

You don't have to be a vegetarian to reduce your carbon footprint. Just look into the background of the places you're getting your meat from. Most places don't torture, use steroids or use huge machines to produce meat. But good fact.

It's not just the cow farts as stated before its the need to harvest grain to feed the cattle, the fossil fuels it takes to slaughter and prepare them and then the trucks that have to ship the meat from location to stores. Thats why it leaves such a big carbon footprint not because cows have gas.

People don't have to become vegetarians. It would help a lot if we all just eat less of it. Germans eat about 62kg of meat each year (on an average)! That's way too much and unhealthy!
