Tobey Maguire, star of the Spiderman flicks, is hoping to make a healthier future for children by rallying for more vegetarian options in school lunches. The father of two-year-old Ruby Sweetheart and a newborn baby boy recently wrote a letter to Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Senator Tom Harkin pleading for changes to the upcoming reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act.

“As a parent, I am contacting you because I am deeply concerned that unhealthy school lunches are contributing to our nation’s childhood obesity epidemic,” writes Maguire. “My wife and I just had our second child, so this issue is tremendously important to us…Let me ask you please to ensure the Child Nutrition Act provides more fruits, vegetables, and healthy vegetarian foods. Young people deserve healthful food, and I can’t imagine a better investment in the future of our country.”

We can't really think of any reason why school lunches SHOULDN'T be healthy. As for vegetarian students, your options are basically limited to greasy fries and vending machine snacks, unless you pack your own lunch.

You can help get the Child Nutrition Act passed by signing this petition.

What food items would you like to see present on a school lunch menu?

I always knew I liked Spiderman :) I'd be thrilled if there were more vegetarian options in school. I hate eating the same thing every day..

Kudos to Tobey!

And I agree that school lunches should be healthier. At least other people's kids have that option. We didn't even get the greasy food. We couldn't bring fast-food on campus, and you had to be working class in order to touch the crap our school was passing off as food. We got undercooked pizza, burritos, half-baked cookies, and candy every day. Though I do think vegetarian food should be an "option" not the only thing available. Maybe cold lunches? Turkey sandwiches?

Having Vegetarian food at school would be the jizz, man!
Healthier food in general would be great.

It's so weird hearing that for everyone else it's so different in other places of the country. At my school, we have fast-food from the student co. store, but, in the cafeteria we have salads readily available. & at my district, they keep changing the pizza because they're trying to find one that's healthy AND yummy.

they say that theey have regulations, but it seems like none of the schools follow them.
all the meals are fat-laden grease bombs. it is gross.

I totally agree with him on this. I'm a vegetarian myself and at school, unless I bring my own lunch, the only choice I have for lunch is a greasy cheese pizza, a soggy salad, or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I really hope that his request will work and more vegetarian options will be added to school lunches.

Thank God, my friends and I are always complaining about how a vegetarian would have to pack to be able to eat anything at our school. :)

we don't even have vending machines at our schools.
because our school's idea of "healthier lunches" equals barely any food. and the food we DO get sucks.

As a vegetarian, my school lunch options are always very limited. I usually pack my own lunch or deal with the lack of food. But it's great he's making an effort for both kids and vegetarians. :)

they should have veggie burgers! veggie options would be great because a *balanced* vegetarian full meal generally has a lot more nutrients that general "meat eater" meals.

I used to be a vegetarian for a long while and healthier, more vegetarian lunch options would be great! The school needs some edible, fresh food anyway.

SarahVOGUE

Signed it. I've always made my own lunches because you really don't know what's in it. If this passes, the rate of child obesity should severely decrease, and for those remaining few that continue in the path of obesity, schools can rest assured that the fault is not in their hands. What a wonderful idea!
