Too many of us are affected by the cancer these days, which kills more than half a million people annually in the US alone. Cancer is one of those things we rarely celebrate. Today, however, marks a milestone in cancer treatment. Exactly one hundred years ago, the first chemotherapy drug was created. While trying to find a cure for syphilis, German doctor Paul Ehrlich accidentally developed the very first effective chemotherapy treatment.

3875553252_9105e0814f

"Ehrlich and Japanese student Sahachiro Hata produced their 606th preparation of an arsenobenzene compound in 1907. Ehrlich watched on Aug. 31 two years later, as Hata injected chemical No. 606 into a rabbit with syphilitic ulcers. The next day, no live spirochetes could be found on the animal’s ulcers, and within three weeks, the ulcers were completely gone.

After testing the drug on mice, guinea pigs and many more rabbits, Ehrlich and Hata sent their miracle cure to the chemical firm Hoechst, which marketed it under the name Salvarsan. The drug became an almost instant success around the world, although many criticized Ehrlich for creating a chemical that might encourage promiscuity."

So cheers to chemotherapy and future medical treatments. We hate that we need it, but we are so thankful that we have it.

It's remarkable to look back at how far we have come in a hundred years. Imagine where we will be in another hundred years, or two hundred years! We are optimistic that our work here today will benefit future generations to come.

Help us continue to fund cancer research by choosing any one of our cancer causes on SocialVibe:

We can't express how saddened we are to learn that DJ AM passed away from a suspected drug overdose last Friday. The world has lost a great talent, a great friend, and a great role model. Although nothing has been confirmed, sources speculate that the recovered drug addict fell back into bad habits following a bad break-up, in addition to stress caused by his brush with death after surviving a plane crash last fall.

picture-221

What makes his death even more bittersweet is the fact that he was working on a project with MTV to provide hope and help for current addicts who wish to break free of using. Here is a video in which DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) talks about the project, called Gone Too Far:

This eerie interview took place just a month before his untimely death. This goes to show you just how very serious a problem substance abuse is. Please don't toy with your health and your future, steer clear of drugs. If you are currently struggling with addiction, you are not alone, and there are ways out. Find help here.

Following his passing last week, Senator Edward M. Kennedy was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery this weekend, just a few hundred feet away from his brothers, President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. The so-called "Lion of the Senate" died at age 77 from brain cancer.

Despite your views on politics, President Obama's speech remembering the late Senator is worth lending an ear to. The moving and tearful speech reminds us of what is truly important in life - treating each other well, with love and respect, to make the world a better place. He gave the eulogy in Boston on Friday, at a public funeral mass.

May he truly rest in peace. The public gravesite in Arlington, VA is now open to visitors.

We've told you before about the upcoming documentary No Impact Man, the story of NYC man Colin Beavan, along with his wife and daughter, who attempt to live one year with as little environmental impact as possible - this means no electricity, no cars, no toilet paper, and only locally-grown food, among other things.

22impactxlarge1

A couple of us had the opportunity to attend a free screening and Q&A session with Colin last night at Environmentaland in LA, and believe us - this is not a film you want to miss! Aside from the entertainment factor, it is full of useful information that all of us should be aware of and take action on, if we expect to reverse the adverse effects we've had on the planet thus far.

Here is a 60 second preview:

The film opens nationwide on Sept 11, 2009, and Oscillosocope Laboratories and TreeHugger.com are giving away FREE tickets to openings in many cities. Here's how you can win:

1. Follow @oscopelabs on Twitter
2. Tweet the following:

#NIMtix @oscopelabs is giving away tix to No Impact Man in theaters Sept 2009 www.noimpactdoc.com

If you live in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, San Diego, Boston, St. Louis, Minneapolis or Salt Lake City, you could win. Just by tweeting. Why not? More info here.

Good luck!

P.S. If you're a bookie than a movie junkie, be sure to read Colin's book about his project, No Impact Man: The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal Who Attempts to Save the Planet, and the Discoveries He Makes About Himself and Our Way of Life in the Process, which is available in book stores tomorrow.

Two of our awesome SocialVibe team members had the chance to attend Outside Lands music festival in San Francisco, CA this past weekend.

In addition to seeing headlining artists such as Pearl Jam, M.I.A., Incubus, Jason Mraz, The Mars Volta, The National, Modest Mouse and many, many more, the guys also had the chance to visit our friends at Surfrider Foundation, who had a booth at the event. The organization, dedicated to keeping our oceans clean and happy, had a unique piece of art on display: a wave made from recyclables. Recyclables that often wind up cluttering and junking up our oceans, making it not only ugly, but dirty, and harmful to the marine life that depend on its cleanliness for survival.

Did anyone here visit Outside Lands this weekend?

truth is no stranger to questioning the practices of Big Tobacco. Like in this year’s campaign where they asked people in hidden-camera interviews if they had what it takes to sell a product that kills 1200 people a day. Surprise surprise, not many did.

Well, now they’re asking for your support, and it’s super easy to do it with SocialVibe.

Just
make truth your cause online and they get some greenbacks without you ever lifting a finger. But without your support, truth can’t keep spewing chunks of truth here and there, and honestly, that’s no fun.

pollwidget_sv_5

Still trying to decide on what cause is right for you? Then why not make your own poll—using truth’s handy-dandy widget, and ask your friends and family what they think? Or you could just poll them to see if they are pro-mullet or anti-mullet. There’s really no way of tracking those things.

Green is the new black, and young people will be the first to tell you why you should reduce, reuse and recycle to save the planet (and their future). But do younguns practice what they preach? A recent survey found that individuals under age 24 are actually the most wasteful demographic when it comes to energy and water.

What gives?

kidwithbulb

When 2,000 UK residents were asked to identify the most energy-consuming appliances, 18-25 year olds were among the group to have the most that didn't know. They also proved to be the group who wasted the most water over all.

The reasoning behind the findings probably lies in the fact that most of these kids, teens and young adults have no idea just how much energy is used by general household tasks and use of appliances. The majority of them have probably never lived on their own, paid their own bills, or owned their own homes. They know that we need to "go green" (this group is among the most informed when it comes to enviro-issues), but they aren't quite sure where they need to cut it where it counts.

Jon Z Bentley, Energy & Environment Partner, IBM Global Business Services, said: "The good news is that Generation Y is showing clear concern for environmental issues. The not-so-good news is that far too few are taking even simple, small steps to control their own wasteful use of resources. This is important not just because of the difference this generation can make today. Climate change and the need to be careful in our use of energy, water and other natural resources are not transient issues. They will be with us for the next 40 years and beyond.

Why do you think this is? Young people are the future, and it is important that they be informed of not just why but HOW we can reduce our carbon footprint. These are our future leaders and decision makers, after all.

Can you list 5 ways that you can save energy in your daily activities? Go!
