A beautiful, 300 pound mother panda named Bai Yun recently added a fifth tally to her cub collection around 5 A.M., Wednesday morning, in the San Diego Zoo. The little nugget of panda is four ounces in weight, approximately the size of a stick of butter, as well as pinkish and very hairless.

This is great news for the endangered panda population, especially considering how stubborn pandas can be with the whole mating process. The male responsible for the fifth cub is Gao Gao, who will not be taking part in raising the newborn, probably due to legal issues concerning a messy divorce (cue rimshot.) More like he is a wild-born panda transferred from the Wolong Nature Reserve and the need for his raising abilities is nullified. Dr. Ron Swaisgood mentions to CNN Radio:
- "She is a very experienced mother. She raised all of her other cubs until about 1.5 years, the natural age for separation. She's a real pro."
The zoo got limited footage of the newborn with Bai Yun, along with a squeaky audio and eerie lighting. You can watch the little bugger squirm around for a few seconds here:
The zoo's Institute for Conservation Research declared the birth a giant success with a fantastic possibility of live for the nameless panda. The currently gender-ambiguous cub will be ready in about four to five month's time for the public, so pencil a visit to the San Diego Zoo into your schedule.
