Heart disease is the leading killer of Americans, partially due to an ever-increasing obesity epidemic. Thanks to a lack of proper nutrition and regular exercise, we the people are fatter and sicker than ever before. One surefire way to combat obesity (and heart disease, later in life) is to start eating a balanced diet at a young age. Unfortunately, school children have little to no control over what their school cafeteria is serving up. Shouldn't our school systems be offering healthier, more wholesome options, versus fried, greasy foods with practically no nutrients?

Many think so, among them Emmy-award winning producer Nicole Betancourt and director Shalini Kantayya, who've created two unique short films for the campaign OneTray.org that show us how important school lunches are. This film, Lunch Encounters of the Third Kind, mimics Close Encounters of the Third Kind along with the clever Mastercard "Priceless" commercials.

If you believe schools should offer healthier options in their cafeteria (including more vegetarian options), please sign the petition to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act, which is up for re-authorization at the end of the month. The Act would support programs such as OneTray's Farm to School Program, which would provide one additional serving of fruit and vegetables per child per day.
What kind of lunches do/did you eat at school? Did you bring your lunch or eat the school food?
