As we mentioned earlier, today is World Vegetarian Day. What better time to launch a new goal for peta2? This month, the animal rights organization is targeting classroom dissection, an old-school practice which makes many animal-loving students cringe.

picture-3

They've declared October to be Cut Out Dissection month, and in honor, have set a new goal to make sure everyone knows about humane alternatives to dissection!

Learn more about the campaign:

They've also released a whole bunch of other cool stuff to help you stamp out classroom dissection, among them, materials to help you speak out against cutting up animals.

Did you know that if you live in one of these lucky states, you can opt-out of classroom dissection? If not, lobby to have your school get with the program by printing out these leaflets and sharing them with your administrators.

Hollywood prankster Steve-O, of Jackass fame, is also spreading the word, and helped PETA launch the new campaign at an LA-area high school yesterday where he promoted his new ad. It cleverly reads: CUT CLASS, NOT FROGS. Of course, we both agree that you shouldn't cut class entirely, but if you don't want to dissect, speak up!

If you want to do more, sign his petition with PETA to stop classroom dissection here.

Awesome.
I'd faint if I had to dissect a frog. I'm an animal lover and could never do that, plus looking at guts and stuff makes me woozy.

it'd be EXTREMELY hard for me to have to dissect any animal.. but its required to pass anatomy at my school. so i don't plan on taking that class.

actually i think dissections should be kept. It's a great way to learn about animals. I dissected a baby pig sophmore year and it was educational not to mention fun.

I think dissection is a good way to learn, but they shouldn't be allowed to treat the animals like this, they should be dead before they pump the chemicals in them, and the gas chamber is just horrible!

Y'know, I really hate it when people are like, "Oh its okay to kill the animals, as long as they're not tortured". EITHER WAY, IT GETS KILLED. IF YOU'RE GONNA KILL IT, THEN YOU MIGHT AS WELL MAKE IT SUFFER BECAUSE THERE ISN'T A DIFFERENCE.
Killing animals is wrong. I don't care if they "suffer" or not, THEY DIE EITHER WAY.

@ Piki:
seriously? the reason that we dissect animals is not that we enjoy killing them, but to learn about body systems so that we can better understand anatomy, and utilize it to help save lives.

actually some people DO dissect humans. those bodies would be of people who donated themselves to science.

i had to dissect worms and frogs in biology. i asked if i could just watch or do it virtually and he said anyone who didn't participate in the dissection would fail the course.

We have several options...in middle school you can opt to do an online dissection. In high school you get in groups and in my group, I was the one who just did all the written work-I didn't even have to look at the yucky frog or starfish guts!

you actually learn a lot from dissecting. some people figure out that they want a career in biology by dissecting.

Chet

Chet says:

I think that dissection is educational and appropriate-at the college level. By that time, people are usually taking those classes because anatomy has something to do with their career path and it is necessary for them to get hands on experience. Dissection in high school is really just pointless in my opinion. A lot of kids aren't really interested in learning, they just want to cut things up and get out of studying.

Hey Piki, dissecting humans is called performing an AUTOPSY. Lots of people do them. Dissections are cool, not to mention extremely educational, and should be kept. PETA is so ridiculous, it's not even funny. There are some things you can't learn out of a text book.

when we did this in my biology class; i complained enough that i was allowed to do my lab report on a web simulation of the dissection and hurt no animals. I was actually more prepared for the test and understood the lab better than the people who dissected the actual animal, there are alternatives and they do work.
