Yesterday afternoon, President Obama revealed plans to implement a new Afghan war strategy , that includes boosting troops levels, to several of his key security staff. Though nothing is confirmed yet, the President is expected to approve up to 30,000 additional U.S. troops to be sent to Afghanistan and to seek further troop commitments from NATO allies.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said that Obama called Secretary of State Hillary Clinton afterward to inform her of his upcoming decision. Afterwards, the President met with and revealed his implementation plans to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Michael Mullen, top U.S. Middle East military commander Gen. David Petraeus and White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, among others in an Oval Office meeting.

He is currently discussing and reviewing the decision with several other world leaders such as Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Obama will be addressing and announcing his decision to the public during a press conference this evening in West Point, NY at 7pm ET.

Obama has been sitting on a request for 40,000 more troops from his top military commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, for several months. There are currently 68,000 U.S. troops currently in Afghanistan, and 45,000 additional troops from NATO allies who are hoping to wipe out al Qaeda elements and stabilize the country while training Afghan forces.

White House officials say the troops will reach Afghanistan in the next six months, and that Obama's plan aims to end the war in the next three years.

What do you think about Obama's decision to send more troops to Afghanistan? Will you be tuning into the President's address tonight? Don't forget - 7pm ET!

Afghanistan=/=Iraq
Not the same place.

If this is what has been decided on, then it is what needs to be done. Go ahead and distrust the entire U.S. government, the Italian Prime Minister, the French President, the Russian President, and the British Prime Minister, if it makes you feel better ;P

mixed feelings... if its gunna get us out in 3 years, it may be worth it. if in 3 years he's saying, "oh we're doing something different and we'll be out in 3 years" then it wont be worth it... but you also have to take into account the number of human lives that may be lost. war is a risky business -for lack of a better phrase- and we have to trust the person that is leading our country and our troops...

There is never a "one size fits all solution". I think President Obama is trying to pull us out of Afghanistan, but before we need to make sure the place is not worst than how we found it. By one measure, in the mid 1990's there were under a thousand schools in the country, today, the number has risen to over 4,000 school. We are making progress, but that also requires more commitment, sometimes even when times are hard. Do I not sound similar to one's personal "relationship problems" ? We need to stay committed even more in the hard times, because if not things fall apart? :)

Hey, life is a bit complicated.

Ok, so did you guys even watch this thing? Yes, he is sending 30,000 in, but he also said he will begin withdrawing in 18 months. A year and a half. If sending 30,000 in now gets us out sooner, it's worth it, and I'm pretty sure he's not just sending 30,000 in for nothing.

I see this news everywhere, and it breaks my heart.
My older brother is being sent over to Afghanistan in January, I won't see him for 6-9 months.
I've never missed someone so much in my life
and he isn't even gone yet
