SpongeBob Squarepants took a quick break from flipping crabby patties for Squidward this week and got a makeover from one of the most famous designers in the world - Karl Lagerfeld, head designer for Chanel. Gone were his standard red tie and khaki shorts combo, replaced by fingerless gloves, leather boots and Chanel shades. Oh yeah, and he was also covered in gold.

The new and improved SpongeBob was created by Lagerfeld and auctioned off at a charity gala to benefit the World Wildlife Fund. Mr. Squarepants fetched the highest amount bid at the event - 1,000 euros, about $1,500 US dollars. Personally, we can't imagine spending that kind of money on a cartoon figurine - even decked in designer duds - but we're glad someone is, because it will help our friends at WWF on their mission to preserve our planet.
What do you think of SpongeBob's Chanel look - love it or hate it?
