We're all for impactful ads that highlight the ramifications that come from our actions, but this gory ad that ties the cost of flying with the death of polar bears pushes the envelope. The clip shows polar bears falling from the sky to their death on a city street and informs viewers that the average European flight costs 400kg in greenhouse gases per passenger, the weight of an adult polar bear.

picture-5

The mastermind behind this ad is Planet Stupid, who say they "wanted to confront people with the impact that short-haul flights have on the climate. We used Polar Bears because they're a well understood symbol of the effect that climate change is having on the natural world."

Warning: this is not for the faint of heart.

What are your thoughts on the ad? Does it go too far or is it an effective means of emphasizing the cost of emitting greenhouse gases?

sometimes the truth hurts. if it takes something like this to let people realize where our world is getting to, then why not. at least no real polar bears were harmed in this ad.

I think its going to have the opposite effect of what is desired. The desired effect is obviously awareness, and maybe even guilt. But the average American doesn't take flights to Europe on a regular basis. So while the AD definitely has a shock factor, I don't believe it will elicit remorse or sadness for what we're all doing to ourselves, and the ones we share this earth with. I think first and foremost humans need to realize that we aren't the only ones who depend on the rain, the sun, the oceans, or the grasslands or the ability of earth to cycle through seasonal changes and consistently resupply us with food, that our fellow animals, big AND small (who were truthfully here first) also depend on these resources. And what we damage or destroy also affects them. And maybe our actions affect them on an even larger scale than us. Humans are by nature selfish, but I think we can break those innate habits and turn things around. If not for ourselves, and out future children, then for the animals who have been minding their own business and don't have a way to speak up for themselves.

that was a bit unorthodox, but a correction for the link you have posted: it's plane stupid, not planet stupid

Oh my goodness. I'm all for ads that shock the masses and inspire remorse, but not so much for ones that are so unnecessarily gruesome like this one. I mean, I definitely understand the purpose but dang. I think they could have gone a better way to be just as effective.

The horrific aspect of this ad is going to override any real impact that it would have, I think.
