Earth Day’s just two days away and, if you haven’t already, it’s time to do away with using plastic water bottles!

More than 2 million plastic bottles are used every 5 minutes in the US alone. Sure you can recycle them but as few as 10% actually make it to a recycling bin. Check out the image below; it’s an “island” of mostly plastic trash, twice the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Plus, it’s not just the bottles themselves that cause problems – 17 million barrels of oil are used each year producing bottled water.

Luckily, there are a slew of options to help you stay hydrated and carry your H2O in style. Here are a few of our faves:

Kuromi Whisper bottle from SIGG

Green Parsley, Tree, & Poppy bottles from EarthLust

Not impressed? Design your own. SIGG allows you to upload photos and add text to make it one-of-a-kind. File that in your head under “potential gift ideas.”

To make giving up plastic even easier on you, we’re giving away 10 SocialVibe aluminum water bottles. Leave a comment, letting us know why you are scaling down your plastic use. We’ll choose 10 people to receive one of these eco-fabulous bottles from SV! Make sure you comment by 11:59pm (Pacific) tomorrow, April 21st.

Good Luck!

before the plastic bottles even get filled, they take up room. they can't be compressed or anything to save room for shipping, so it takes more vehicles to ship the plastic bottles. before they are even thrown away, they're harming the environment. even if i don't use reusable bottles, i prefer boxed water. it's collapsable so they can use fewer vehicles to transport them, and they're recyclable. plus, they donate 20% of their profits to charities promoting reforestation and clean water in third world countries.

1. Not good for the environment. And...
2. EXPENSIVE!! Aluminum bottles, while an investment at first, are a GOOD investment because that $1.50 plastic bottle adds up to quite a sum over the course of a week, month, year...

I'm scaling down my plastic use because plastic can take between 20 and 700 years to decompose depending on the plastic type. Styrofoam doesn't decompose ever. Plastic bags take around 20 years to decompose. if you think that's bad then how about 250 years for a plastic cup or 450 years for a plastic bottle or diaper/nappy. Can you imagine how many plastic bottles and diapers/nappies could accumulate with that time frame? Not all plastics are recyclable either. Fishing line takes 700 years to decompose. With an aluminium drink bottle you wouldn't continue to add to the masses of plastics used in water bottles. You wouldn't add to the crude oil or PVC use or to the greenhouse gas emissions that are used in production and transportation. Studies have shown that PVC which is the main component of most plastics can cause some pretty awful health problems too, as can BPA. I reuse a proper drink bottle over and over but I'm certainly worried about the long term affects on my health, I think an aluminium bottle would be safer and more durable but I'm a uni student and I don't have $AUD40 in my wallet to go get one. When I need to buy a drink I buy glass bottled juices which is a bit better than plastic. I try to buy products in recyclable packaging as much as possible but I do get very annoyed when no part is recyclable. Some people are careless and litter, risking the lives of living creatures who cannot breathe if they are smothered by plastic material or who get sick if surrounded by litter and waste. Not only does it look disgusting but it will take over 4 lifetimes for littered plastic bottles to decompose. 4 lifetimes! Shouldn't we try and fix this problem for the next generation? I certainly wouldn't want my future daughter/son to have to live in a polluted world of waste. If people understood this problem more maybe they'd think again about buying that bottled water next time they go to the corner shop.

Luan Cortes

POSTED 2 YEARS AGO

I'm reducing my plastic usage because if I don't or think it's useless, I'll be writing on my own gravestone... We all must replace plastic with more lasting and less harmful materials such as aluminium and steel. If we start causing less damage to enviroment and therefore to all planet's life by using aluminium bottles to carry our water instead of buying disposable plastic ones, we can minimize the consequences of centuries of destruction, pollution and carelessness. When we humans begin to realize we are part of Nature and reintegrate into it, we'll be able to change our mentalities and live together one another and Nature as a wonderful, dynamic and energetic system.

I'm giving up Plastic bottles, after coming to the realization of how many I actually use. Until last week, I bought at least one a day, and then another pop bottle by midday. It was the unhappy realization that I used anywheres from 365-1095 per year. (Scary number.) Knowing this, I want to cut out my plastic water bottle consumption completely.

My family used to buy cases of bottled water that cost us up to $30 a month. When I found out how bad they were for the environment, I convinced my mum to start using filtered water instead. Hear is food for thought, By giving up plastic we also help save the energy it takes for the recycling facilities to melt and reshape the material, Plus the gas used to ship the new materials puts more carbon in the air. The Reason I am scaling down my plastic use is because the plastic does not biodegrade for thousands of years in the landfill depending on the type of plastic and that can be harmful for animals who try to eat it, ect. I’m scaling down on using plastic water bottles for many reasons. Mainly it’s because the fact that 88 percent of these plastic bottles don’t even end up being recycled. They are instead thrown away where it then takes about 450 years to decompose. They also go into our oceans. There was found to be six pounds of plastic to a pound of algae in the ocean! Besides the fact that these plastic bottles are so environmentally unfriendly some also contain toxins called Bisphenal that causes harm to the body when ingested. The sad part is that it is said that 90 percent of Americans have already been exposed to this chemical. That is really just one of the ways we are ruining our world for our future generations...Oh right...That’s us! It just seems automatic to do something so simple (not using plastic bottles) and helping our environment. P.S. I got some of this info from treehugger.com! I hope I get a reusable bottle so I don’t pollute the earth!(:

i do not use plastic water bottles cause its a waste of money, and even though many companies that their drink in bottles trying to change the shape of the bottle to save the environment, but that is still not enough we need to stop using plastic water bottles completely!

I am using less plastic and recycling. We have our own recycle trash can and ever time i take it out to the road it is full with recycled items. I think i should get one of these because I bring a bottle of water to school daily and I have to throw it away because we don't have any recycle bins. If I did get one of these I would stop buying plastic water bottles and use this for school.

I gave drinking bottled water and I bought a Pur water filter. I like knowing my water bottle won't end up in a landfill AND Pur donates TONS of water to people in 3rd world countries when you buy a filter. (: Everyone's always like "why are you carrying a cup around?" ahaha

i have never used plastic water bottles and if my family does we reuse them. We find that when you have a cranberry juice bottle and clean it and fill it with water... IT STILL TASTES LIKE CRANBERRY JUICE!!!

ive gave up drinking from plastic bottles because its bad for the environment, and it's a lot cheaper to just drink water from a faucet. I heard somewhere you arent supposed to reuse plastic because something in the plastic which totally turned me off from using them.

Plastic water bottles are just harming the enviroment. A better way to carry water is with an aluminum water bottle. It's awesome! I would like to get one! O.O :)

just this week i stopped bringing the plastic bottles to school and have instead been using the re-usable ones. i realized that when i recycle all those plastic ones they have to melt down the plastic to reuse it... causing more carbon dioxide to go into the air, causing global warming, killing animals all around the world because they're losing their habitats...

Social Vibe is helping our world and the people in it so much. Not only is it helping certain charities but it's making people like me aware of what needs to be done to save the planet and it's people. I try to no longer use plastic water bottles because this website has made me aware.

Well in my family, we have never made a habit of drinking bottled water when we could get it right out of the tap, but ever since I saw "The Story of Drinking Water" I can't even bare to see those bottles on shelves. So I've been making an effort to help save the earth, before its too late.

I never drink bottled water because if you let the water sit at room temperature too long, the plastic starts decomposing in the water and you drink it and when you drink it some forms of plastic coat your brain and can cuse Alzheimers or cancer.

When I buy plastic water bottles, I reuse the bottle over and over again until I can't use it anymore.

I'm not using plastic bottles anymore because it's easier to use it's easier on the earth. It's cheaper especially since NY put taxes on bottled water. It's a good idea and you can recycle the aluminum can can it is more efficient than a plastic bottle. Plus most of them end up in land fills and will stay there for years since it isn't very biodegradable and sometimes they end up getting into the ocean. Saving money, helping the earth, and just overall easier why wouldn't you use aluminum water bottles over plastic?

i stopped buying bottled water because i dont want to support the production of plastic that contains BPA in it, i drink tap water, so an aluminum water bottle would be awsome :-)

This is absolutely great, and I would love to have one! This just shows how much people really care about the environment. Remember, we live on the world, the world doesn't live on us. Thus we must take care of it.

using aluminium is a great idea for water bottles.....as plastic is recyclable but polluting....as it is made from petroleum, specially the high density polythene it takes 1.75 kilograms to make i kilogram hdpe-high density polythene......lets join hands to save dis planet earth and lets celebrate environment day on 5th of may! hope u all would be a part of it :)
