Urban Outfitters is at the center of yet another t-shirt controversy for selling a shirt that says “Eat Less.”

eat_less_tee

On one hand, it IS just a shirt. The shirt itself did not create any of our myriad diet and weight-related issues. On the other, it does seem like an insensitive reminder to the millions who struggle with body issues and unhealthy attitudes towards food on a daily basis.

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 5-10% of girls and women suffer from eating disorders and they’re becoming increasing prevalent among men and boys.

Some say that while the shirt itself isn’t offensive, the fact that they’re using an extremely thin young girl to sell it makes it appear like an endorsement for anorexia.

Are people reading into this too much or do we need to discourage messages like this if we want to change attitudes about eating and body image for the next generation?

And people wonder why kids hate themselves and suffer from eating disorders. Fuck.

If anything, it should say "Eat Right."

Agreed. Why is Skinny attractive? Because you are skinny does NOT mean you are healthy...

"the fact that they’re using an extremely thin young girl to sell it" is a little much. That's stretching it. Also, if it wasn't from Urban Outfitters, there's a chance this would be a different story. UO gets a bad rap for some of the merch they sell, but this is sugar sweet compared to some of other shirts. Everything doesn't have to be one big controversy guys.
UO would be making a mistake if they decide to pull it from the shelves.

I agree with the "Eat Right" kid. I have to say, as some one who is extremely thin naturally though, don't harass the skinny kids who just happen to be skinny either. There's no "Right weight", no matter what people get harassed.

I have no problem with the model. I don't see her ribs. She looks like me. The shirt itself is intensive, but so is a Lot of other stuff people wear.

This is coming from someone with anorexic or ex-anorexic family members.
It's an issue, yeah, but keep in mind it's a complicated one.

We as a whole could also look at this from another angle. Who's to say it doesn't mean people are overeating and becoming overweight? This could have a positive outcome...

MarioParty88

POSTED 1 YEAR AGO

Yeh, I also agree with the "Eat Right" saying.
This is what adds to what I hear. I hate when I hear thin girls saying,"I'm too fat." This shirt adds so much negativity to the world :/

That's disgusting, how greedy do you have to be to sell something like this?

I don't even see how someone could read too far into it. It's saying "You're fat, stop eating." That's it. There is absolutely no way it could be secretly deep and meaningful. Personally I think it's in bad taste, but at least everyone knows not to talk to you if you're wearing something that rude.

I don't understand. The t-shirt isn't pointing at a specific person and telling them to eat less. A problem will only arise if a person looks at it and thinks "they're right, I do need to", meaning they already have a problem with their self-image of weight. Anyone comfortable with themselves wouldn't look at it twice, surely?
I just don't see anyone looking at someone wearing it thinking that they've bought that tee just to point out to YOU INDIVIDUALLY that you need to eat less.
Perhaps I've completely missed the point or just don't understand. If I have then all this shirt does is just add to the problem which I think majorly stems from the modern day use of excessively skinny models/celebs anyway.

Michelle Obama's new plan talks about helping kids with obesity. Maybe this is a direct message after all!

HAL786

HAL786 says:

Ok if it were for tackling obesity, and said on top of the eat less something like 'obesity kills' then 'eat less' it would make sense.
But that wasn't the case.
So this is wrong.
And yeah, it should have been 'eat right', instead.

G.D. Carroll

I don't agree with the message this shirt sends. Eat right would be much better. You can eat less, but if you're eating nothing but junk food, it's not going to make any difference if you eat less. You are still going to be unhealthy somewhere down the line.

I really don't find anything positive with a shirt like this. It does seem like it supports eating disorders right away. Even after careful and considerable thinking the only excuse I can think of is if it were made as one of those smart-ass, saucy shirts targetting the reader like, "Hey you, fatass! Loose some weight". Or in another case, maybe for some anti-obesity group that is working on self improvement, while undermining themselves. Also, I think it was not a smart idea to use a model that looks so frail.

it would be insulting if bigger or obese people were to look at the shirt. it would be more insulting if the artist behind it was literally making a statement against obese people. But i think its more of a self image problem if that were to happen. Either being skinny or obese, they all have their downsides.

I honestly just do not understand what they were trying to say when they made this shirt. If it WAS meant to just be taken "Eat Less" that's a little mean, don't you think? I doubt it will sell very well, either way.

i think it is just a shirt, people do eat alot in america so they need to eat less.

Biochem_Design

I think it leaves place for bad interpretations. Let me explain.
If it is like Claggy said: "Eat right" then I think its a good shirt that help raise awareness about the thousands of people/children who are starving because they don`t even have acces to food.

Eating disorders are a completely different fight. They arise from corporate publicity and more *social issues*...

If the meaning was (but I dought it) "eat less to look more pretty" then sure it is offensive!

Cassy

Cassy says:

Aundria

It depends on your point of view.
People are always spending money on weight loss plans, I find it ridiculous. So when people ask how to lose weight I say just that. "eat less" and exercise you don't need to BUY anything to learn that. I agree that Americans should eat less. ALOT less, but enough to be healthy and get enough nutrition. Health is the goal, not a certain look.

Now, if a HEALTHY girl saw this, decided she was fat and started eating an inadequate amount of calories to try to look like a model, that would be bad. But somehow I don't see that happening. It's just a model, not a celeb that girls really look up to. I think this is just a sarcastic shirt. The world is full of them.

Having overcome an eating disorder, I feel UO is making light of a very serious issue. Some people treat ED's as a glamorous disease that they can try out and stop at anytime. This is just asinine, of course, and those who are actually suffering from ED's and other body-image disorders pay the price by getting ignored or blown-off by those around them. UO seems to be capitalizing on this.

@codyb - I do think that the shirt does seem to send a bad message, but regarding your point, just because someone's skinny doesn't mean they 'starve them selves to look like aliens'. I find this offensive. I am just as thin as this model and always have been. I certainly don't starve myself, nor do I think I, nor this model, look like an alien. That's just rude.
