Forever 21, the clothing store known for bringing über-cheap, up-to-the-second, high-fashion to young girls, has launched a maternity line aimed at teens.

While they’ve been careful not to say that teens are the target, the first 3 stores will open in the 3 states that just happen to have the highest teen pregnancy rates: California, Arizona, and Texas.

Salon’s Sara Libby writes that while “over-reactive parents and pundits constantly point a finger of blame at any slice of pop culture that deals with teen pregnancy,” they may have a case this time.

"The brand makes a concerted effort to court customers who can't yet drive themselves to the mall.”

Forever 21 is growing quickly and recently launched a plus-size line for young women. A maternity line seems like a natural extension, but is making an effort to reach areas with high rates of teen pregnancy unethical or just smart business?

well i think that the locations was for buisiness but i don't know how much its neccessarily encouraging teen pregnancy. Besides these girls should not be pregnant because of values or out of just being smart. Fashion has nothing to do with it.

I don't think anyone thinks teen pregnancy is cool. No girl having underage sex would really think the idea of pregnancy as a teenager is glamorous, so it's just smart business for the company.

Gotta say I am not sure about this. I don't necessarily agree with this, but I guess it's "smart business"... "/

As much as people hate to think about it, teen pregnancy does happen and then some girls end up trying to fit into their old clothes when they start really showing and if Forever 21 can make affordable clothes for these girls I say let them do it. Teen girls like to look good, plain and simple.

I understand that some may think it's encouraging pregnancy. But if they want clothes from forever 21 they don't have to get pregnant. They can just go to forever 21. Why get pregnant? So I think it's just smart business.

I saw this at my Forever21 in my city, and my first reaction was not, "How dare they?! Glamorizing teen pregnancy..." because I thought it would be for the women in their 20s. They shop there too, you know. But on the other hand, teen pregnancy is not something that should be handled with a heavy hand. If a girl wants to look nice, then they have that opportunity now. It IS good business and it won't make the girls' self-esteems go down by forcing them to wear jeans with an elastic waist-band.

I think it's great that forever 21 is providing a maternity clothing line for he younger generation. I am 21-years-old and have not yet had any children, however when I do I will be very greatful to not have to wear clothes that i don't like.

the fact that people think that forever 21 is aiming the new maternity clothing line at teens specifically is really ignorant. All of Forever 21's clothing has always been aimed at people in their 20's. It even says so in their name!

ewwww. i think it sorta gives an excuse to girls that are pregnant a little leeway umm. but at the same time its like this is sorta of a good idea but i think it should still have something saying its still not right to be pregnant at a young age. so its a 50/50 kind of thing

Well duh no one's going to get pregnant over clothes, but it is just one more step towards subconsciously telling teens pregnancy is ok...just one little step...

The company is obviously taking an advantage of the situation-seeing that there is a great population of teen, young adults being pregnant and they tend to make their money of their mistakes..besides when you are pregnant looking pretty is the least in the mind eating proper foods and exercising is what really matters but, maybe I am wrong I am just a mother.

I have no issue with this. Girls get pregnant, it's a fact. There's a store coresponding to this fact, that's fine. They aren't forcing anyone to get pregnant, and no one will just for the clothing. Don't blame a store for how a child/teen/adult/person acts.

By creating the line, Forever 21 is sending the message that people are going to make it ok to be pregnant as a teen. I think it's socially ignorant to see it any other way. By providing clothing for girls during pregnancy, it lightens the "this is not right, it shouldn't be happening" message that should be reflected from society.
