Spring has sprung! Easter is just two days away and to celebrate the season, we're bringing you a few little known facts about everyone's second favorite candy-related holiday.

  • Both eggs and bunnies are symbols of fertility and rebirth; they've been associated with springtime since long before Christianity was a religion.
  • Chocolate eggs first became popular in the late 1800s when the Cadbury chocolate company found a way to make chocolate better tasting and easier to digest. Prior to that, it consisted mostly of fat and various starches.

  • Solving murder mysteries is popular in Norway during Easter. Newspapers have murder mysteries for their readers to solve, major TV networks run crime shows, and milk cartons have murder mysteries printed on them.
  • The word “Easter” was borrowed by early Christians from the name of the Pagan goddess, “Eostre,” in an effort to help Pagan converts assimilate to Christianity.
  • Pretzels were originally associated with Easter. The twists were thought to resemble arms crossed in prayer.
  • Ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Persians all used dyed eggs in their spring celebrations.
  • Enough jellybeans are manufactured in the US each year for Easter to fill a plastic egg the size of a nine-story building. Red ones are the hands-down favorite.

If you celebrate Easter, what's your favorite Easter tradition?

You can't help but love the adorable and supremely talented Leona Lewis, especially when she is performing extreme acts of kindness like rescuing a bunny in Los Angeles, refusing multi-million dollar deals because she is against fur, or speaking out on behalf of animals across the world in this PSA for World Society for the Protection of Animals.

Hear why Leona feels particularly close to this cause and how she has changed her habits to protect animals. You'll even catch a glimpse of her own pup, Misty.

If you, like Leona, have a soft spot for animals and want to raise awareness for their protection, please choose peta2 or spcaLA as your Cause on SocialVibe.

We've got total vocal-envy for Leona Lewis. Not only does the woman have golden pipes, but she's also got a golden heart, especially when it comes to animals. The 24 year-old singer recently saved a white rabbit from becoming a homeless man's dinner!

After spotting the man walking the rabbit on a leash down an Los Angeles street, Leona approached him and asked what he was planning on doing with the bun. "Don't know, probably eat it," he replied. The animal lover and vegetarian quickly offered the man $100 in exchange for the rabbit, and suggested he use it to buy other food. She named the bunny Melrose, presumably after the street she rescued him on.

This isn't the first time vegetarian and animal activist has made a big statement, the British singer refused $1.7 million from UK department store Harrods because of their selling fur products. She was also named PETA's Sexiest Vegetarian Alive. In her own words:

“I’m totally against animal cruelty,” she said. “I don’t have clothes, shoes or bags made from any animal products.”

Now, this begs the question: where would one randomly find a white rabbit? Nonetheless, it's one less rabbit in someone's tum. It'll be cuter in her garden, anyway.
